BEST INDOOR PUTTING PRACTICE

Good putting plays a major part in lower scores. It is tough to score well if you are inconsistent on the greens. Getting the ball rolling on your intended line with a consistent putting stroke will help you hole more putts. While the speed of putts is very important, not being able to start the ball on the correct line will make for a frustrating day on the greens.

I noticed over the last few months that I have a tendency to push putts when I am under pressure and miss them to the right. I am normally a very good putter so I knew this was something I needed to work on.

With the weather being too cold to play golf outside I spent the last few weekends in my garage working on my game. I set up my indoor putting mat and used my favorite practice training aid, the EyeLine Golf Putting Mirror. This putting mirror helps you see your eye position, shoulder alignment, head movement, putter face alignment, and stroke path. The first thing I noticed was that my shoulders were not lined up and my right foot had a tendency to be open. This would make sense that my putts would have a tendency to miss to the right. I worked on correcting these issues and the ball seemed to roll more on a consistent line. In between watching football I straightened out my alignment and was able to make 100 putts in a row from 6 feet. The next weekend I did the same 100 putts of practice on the mirror.

Making putts on a flawless and only slightly sloped putting mat is one thing. But would this practice actually help me on the course?

The weather warmed up and I was able to get out and play two days this past week. I was pleasantly surprised to see a very noticeable improvement with my putting and could really tell  on putts from 10 feet or less. In fact, his helped me shoot my lowest score of the year!

In the past I have rarely used the putting mirror but I plan to incorporate this into my weekly practice going forward.
